Colour of the Year 2019 - Living Coral

Airbnb and Apple inspire this year’s Colour of the Year!

Move over millennial pink. Pantone have appointed a new pink-tinted tone as their Colour of the Year for 2019.

Introducing Living Coral, Pantone’s colour of the year 2019, described by the colour experts as: “An animating and life-affirming coral hue with a golden undertone that energises and enlivens with a softer edge”. It’s far from last year’s colour, Ultra Violet, but as predicted with every colour of the year, it will dominate the design and interior industries over the next 12 months.

The decision of Colour of the Year is not an easy one to make. Experts take into account influences from the world of interiors, fashion, design, travel and current socio-economic conditions. Pantone’s consulting division analyse the current year’s colour trends, with attention particularly paid to the colours that appear in companies branding efforts. For 2019, Pantone highlighted how coral was used by the likes of Airbnb as part of their rebrand, and Apple’s launch of the new iPhone XR, as a sign of the colours domination in the new year.

Living Coral describes our needs for connection. As part of the technological world we live in today, many of our daily interactions are through a screen creating distance between one another. Pantone believe the warmth from this tone is a perfect way for us to reconnect.

Laurie Pressman, Vice President of the Pantone Colour Institute said: “A global team of colour experts comb the world looking for new colour influences. This can include the entertainment industry and films in production, traveling art collections and new artists, fashion, all areas of design, popular travel destinations, as well as new lifestyles, playstyles and socio-economic conditions. Influences may also stem from new technologies, materials, textures and effects that impact colour, relevant social media platforms and even upcoming sporting events that capture worldwide attention.”

Vibrant, yet mellow, this marine tone embraces us with warmth and nourishment, providing comfort and buoyancy in our continually shifting environment. Based on colours found beneath the sea, the coral tone pulls you in and invites you to relax and find joy in its warm hues. During a press release, Pantone noted that Living Coral “symbolises our innate need for optimism and joyful pursuits” - a feeling that, perhaps, people might be craving in today’s landscape.”

This colour may seem daunting at first, but there are many ways for you to incorporate Living Coral into your home.

A great way to do just this, is to start small. Try adding decor pieces to bookshelves and coffee tables to begin with, then work your way up to items such as prints, rugs and cushions. For the bold and daring, a fresh coat of paint in the coral tone could upgrade a room that’s feeling dreary and in need of a desperate upgrade. Or for something more subtle on the walls, choose a patterned wallpaper that incorporates the hero of the hour.

Of course, here at Pentagon we’re going to talk about tiles. We’ve have an array of tiles available in stunning coral shades, which you can view here.
